THE SMALL-CRACK PROBLEM The small-crack problem is in essence one created by fracture mechanics through a breakdown in the similitude concept at small crack sizes [8]. For example, it has been shown [9] that crack tip strain fields for large and microstructurally small fatigue cracks.
